David Michaelis
lives in Washington, D.C., and writes about books for The New York
Observer. He is the author of N. C. WYETH: A Biography (Knopf,
1998) and a contributor to Wondrous Strange: The Wyeth Tradition
(Bulfinch, 1998) and One Nation: Patriots and Pirates Portrayed by
N. C. Wyeth and James Wyeth (Bulfinch, 2000). His previous works include
a collection of biographical sketches, The Best of Friends (Morrow,
1983), a novel, Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl (Bantam, 1989), and
a nonfiction narrative, Mushroom: The Story of the A-Bomb Kid (Morrow,
1978), written in collaboration with college roommate John Aristotle Phillips.
In November 1998, N. C.
WYETH: A Biography was reviewed on the cover of the New York Times
Book Review and in 1999 won the Ambassador Award for Biography given
by the English Speaking Union of the United States.
His writing has also appeared
in American Heritage, The American Scholar, Condé Nast
Traveler, The New Republic, and Vanity Fair. David Michaelis's
essay "Provincetown" has been included in The Best American
Essays 2001, edited by Kathleen Norris, series editor Robert Atwan
(Houghton Mifflin, 2001).

Michaelis is currently working on the first full-length biography of Charles
